How To Be A One-of-A-Kind Entrepreneur – 3 Ways to Break New Ground without Breaking Your Heart or Draining Your Bank Account

How To Be A One-of-A-Kind Entrepreneur – 3 Ways to Break New Ground without Breaking Your Heart or Draining Your Bank Account

There’s a lot of information available about how to be successful at a small business. The problem is, most of this information is aimed at extroverts who’re in a big hurry to make as much money as possible, and doesn’t contribute something great to the world. If that sounds as terrible to you as it does to me, here are 3 pearls of wisdom from the real-life trenches for how to build business as unusual.

1.  Follow the path less taken. As in fashion, being fully self-expressed is going to mean you’re in a category of one. If you find yourself in an ‘in crowd,’ whether that be at mainstream events, or among a gaggle of agreeable others, you’re likely in the thick of a fad or trend.

Legwarmers and Farrah Fawcett hair trends may feel fun to be part of in the short term, but you know that’s not going to make you proud 10 years later. Being an original takes work and one of the easiest measures is if you’re a little lonely on your path. This goes for business as well as your wardrobe or personal style.

Congratulations. If you’re feeling lonely sometimes, it’s just because you’ve chosen, every step of the way, to follow the path less taken and leave the Kool-Aid behind. Keep going.

2.  Allow yourself the luxury of time. One of the biggest failures in small business is the rush-job. Hurrying, adrenalizing, pushing….not only leads to poor results, but usually poorer health in the long run.Hurrying is no longer the badge of the well-coached, folks.

Great coaching helps you pick the right process, path or step, be more accurate and precise about your moves, and gives you peace along the way. Don’t expect outrageous success rapidly – it’s unlikely to happen with a newer income stream or idea. Big paydays still happen, but only when you’ve paid your dues.

Keep your expenses low – your bank account will thank you. Allow yourself breathing room to test and fail a lot. You want to win the long game, why? Because what your business offers the world is so worth being patient. Make your plans accordingly.

3.  Cultivate your inner scientist. If you think you’re here to build a business that follows another person’s model, may I invite you to try painting by number and faking a Mona Lisa in your mind? Give it time. No matter how many of these replicas you attempt, you’ll finally find out. You have no choice. You must find your one-of-a-kind painting to do because you’re not Leonardo da Vinci.

What is your one-of-a-kind business that only you can do? How do you start? Begin by proving the worth of your work by testing with any clients who’ll let you. Do the best job you possibly can so you can start collecting proof (something you can show) of what only you can do.

When you’re building something one-of-a-kind, you’re on uncharted ground, so you’ll need to measure as you go, and course correct along the way. Soon, you’ll have lots of data – an ecosystem of data that will guide you to what you seek.

Especially for independent thinkers, sensitive souls, and people on the leading edge, the above 3 things are doorways into new paradigm success as a small business. None of them requires you to rush, pressure you to maximize profits immediately, and each step allows you to contribute as much value as is humanly possible.

4.  The final word…Anyone who tries to tell you they know a color-by-number method to sustainable business success and tries to teach you this en masse, is candidly, deluded, or worse, in my opinion, being less than truthful. In the final analysis, experimentation is the only holy ground, and successful entrepreneurs – the ones that last decades in the market – are all scientists at heart.

Kerry Belviso – Holistic Kinesiologist & Alignment Expert – Melbourne Australia

My name is Kerry Belviso and I’m a holistic Kinesiologist for my business: http://awakenkinesiology.com

Earlier this year, my business was going well – I was seeing lots of clients and I was looking for the next step but with no idea what it would entail.

Then I was lucky enough to win three coaching sessions with Marg.

Although I’d started to get a few little ideas, nothing had properly formulated until Marg prompted me with her response to my intake questions: “you’re obviously doing something right, you just need to find what it is and bottle it”.

Immediately I knew the answer: Alignment.

I started to write down everything I knew, thousands of words.

As Marg and I started our coaching sessions, the bones for my Business Alignment program were taking shape.

But I still had no idea what would be the best way to share the information – I had run workshops, but the logistics of promoting and running a tele-class series for other therapists seemed beyond me. And yet this did seem the best way to get the material to the largest number of people.

Marg was insightful and clear in helping me get to the core of what I wanted to share and what would be most helpful to other people.

Even still, the prospect of fully developing the material and sharing it more widely was completely daunting – stepping up always brings up fears and anxieties and I also doubted I had the time to commit to such a big project while so busy with my clients.

I got on my third call with Marg to explain why I couldn’t possibly present a tele-class, workshop or anything else at this time. I still don’t know *quite* how she did this but by the end of the call when she asked if I would run a call on my material for her people, I found myself saying “yes”.

Here’s what she said that tipped my perspective:

“Kerry, if you have this information that could help other therapists, people who I know are struggling and this could be the thing that helps them … who are you not to share it?”

I think Marg was validated there as enrolments for the program started to arrive – ten people by the first call, then twenty by the second and around 35 by the end.

Now the program is available (with three additional recordings) as a home study so it can continue to help people who feel blocked as they start or develop their natural therapy business and start to get clear and aligned!

Marg gave me a push along when I needed it (as we all do at times when our doubts surface) but also provided an enormous amount of practical know-how about certain things that simply did or did not work. Like many of us, I didn’t know what I didn’t know and there is no chance that even if I’d managed to get the material written that I would have pulled it together so quickly, or allowed it to be accessed by so many people in the eventual format that is now sitting as a product on my site.

You can read more about the program and buy it from here: http://kinesiologyforbusiness.com/teleclasses/

The program is just $115, which for all the benefits participants reported is a VERY small price to pay. If you attract another client or two the program will have easily paid for itself!

BUT because YOU are one of Marg’s lovely people, and therefore a big part of the reason why I got over myself to create this work, you’re eligible for a DISCOUNT!

Yay!

Just enter IMWITHMARG in the discount box as you check out

I want this material to help as many people as possible. In fact, I’ll close by sharing a message I got just this morning.

“I love the alignment process, did another one last week of my own accord using your techniques and of course big changes straight away!

My business is growing in so many ways and just so fast.  All about right timing and the alignment process.”

Who AM I not to share this work?

And who are YOU not to share the work bubbling inside your being that has the potential to also help many others?

Leonie Marks – Soul Access – Adelaide – Australia

I’m an Intuitive Astrologer, Energy Medicine Master, Soul Mentor and Teacher.
I’m on a mission of global service to ignite, inspire and support people to embrace their soul urge to SHINE.  I’ve become an expert at navigating the inner territory one must travel between here and SHINE.

3 years ago I had to make a decision. Take my passion and turn it into a full time business – or get a hair cut and get a real job!  As a rebel with a cause, there was no way I was cutting my hair.
I’d been in business before but I’d already applied all I knew from that world. This new learning curve looked steep and overwhelming – I needed help, fast. My friends ‘upstairs’ redirected Mz Margz newsletter, via a friend into my inbox . . . and I’d gobbled up Margz’ gift of the 90 day challenge by 2.00am that night.

I wasn’t waiting another 89 days to take the next step, so I….. Phoned Mz Margz  the next morning and after an inspiring discussion and some very practical insights I could use right now, I knew I’d found the person I needed.  Mz Margz had everything I was missing.  A tried and true step-by-step system, and the ongoing support to ensure I could put it into action in a way that works for me.

Looking back, the magic ingredient for me was that Margz not only had the products, she could really see me . . . in my full shining potential and she believed in me . . . the same way I really see and believe in everyone I work with.
3 years later… it feels like a life time ago, that my coaching began.  Margz has supported me through huge changes, interstate moves and many challenges.  I’m still loving the journey, learning, growing and achieving business goals I would never have reached alone.

Soul Access is looking forward to new business premises in 2011 and enjoying connecting with beautiful clients from all over Australia and overseas. I’m stepping into joint ventures and courageously offering my gifts to the world as I’ve always wanted to, but never knew how.

Oohh and its also my 3rd year of writing the New Moon content for Mz Margz “Abundance Cheque Reminders”.

At last the products are coming … I’ve created my first cd Embracing the Shift Within which will hit my online shop in January.  Pre-release orders are already coming in.
And after 6 months in soul retreat this year, my new website, products and packages are taking shape, my newsletter is buzzing again (and it continued to attract new subscribers while I was regenerating), requests for public talks, joint ventures and new clients are rolling in.  My first 2011 retreat Soul Deep is happening in February – with longer group and personal retreats in the planning as we speak.
And one more thing . . . Going Global . . .  I’ve always seen myself working nationally and internationally in my visions, but couldn’t see the “how” part.  Tada!!! With Margz online knowledge – I quickly learned to manage websites, blogs, databases, ezines and all the essentials we need for a healthy online presence.  After my first teleclass lesson, I created a 4 week teleseminar series that was fully booked within days, with clients from SA, Vic, NSW, Qld & UK.  Its now part of my live workshop series and in the process of becoming a cd/e-book product – and that’s just the first one – Teleseminars rock!
Readings all over the Planet   And as part of the fun, with my wonderful friend Mz Skype my reading and mentoring services are now available globally, in the comfort of your own home.
Mz Margz has inspired me out of hiding in my well crafted comfort zone.  Pushed my buttons until my cause ignited into a mission and then fuelled my passion with all the ‘how to’ I needed to get it all happening.  3 years ago, I was frustrated and wasting so much energy and passion trying to move forward in ways that were never going to work.  I’m so grateful for taking the plunge with Mz Margz.  I know I’m teetering on the edge of another steep learning curve – and I’m throwing logs on the fire – yelling out to the universe bring it on!  Margz’s teachings have integrated and become an inspiring voice in my head, that kicks in the pantz as it speaks! Gotta love that!
Above all else she has helped me to believe, beyond doubt, that my brand of special is needed by many, valuable and worth paying for. Now my much loved clients reflect that back to me every day.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Mz Margz X

Claire Heywood – SunYoga – Sunshine – Melbourne Australia

Hi there,

I’m a yoga teacher, shiatsu practitioner, studio owner and yoga entrepreneur.

2 years ago my fledgling business, SunYoga, was going nowhere. I was working as hard as I could and was exhausted. I felt out of my depth and was very negative about my future prospects. I had little skills in running a business and realised that setting up a lovely space with nice brochures and a nice website wasn’t enough to get customers walking in the door. So I enlisted the help of a business mentor (not Mz Margz). The mentor was helpful but conservative, with limited ideas or understanding of my micro micro business and just kept telling me what a hard job I had. This I knew already! After 2 meetings they advised that I “plan to get out”. I wasn’t ready to pull the pin so the search continued…

Enter Mz Margz… After one hour of honest, spirited discussion with MZ Margz everything changed. My spirit lifted, my enthusiasm was recharged and I was buzzing! It really was a hallelujah moment. I had found the right person. HOORAY! She did not for one moment doubt that I could make my business work and even in that initial call identified so many ways that I could move forward and where I was misdirecting my time, energy and dollars.

2 years later… With our regular coaching sessions I am steadily learning, developing, growing and achieving in my business. Success starts to flow my way and SunYoga is humming with wonderful clients who love and value our work. I have paid off my start-up loan and my profit over the last financial year increased by 70%. Not bad, eh?

But wait, there’s more… I have produced and co-created the elements – guided relaxation, a beautiful CD which within one year is in profit and sold close to 50% of the stock. I teach regular weekend retreats and in October, 2010, I will teach my first interstate yoga holiday retreat (50% booked already). I have created 3 mini yoga instructional videos which are available free via the internet and produce a monthly e-newsletter which is enjoyed by around 700 subscribers and has lead to me writing my first article for a national yoga magazine. And lastly (and what a treat) I have hired a cleaner!

Mz Margz inspires me to dare to be my best, to work methodically towards achieving my full potential. She delights in my sometimes unorthodox approach and guides me with humour and compassion, (and is not afraid to cut through my bullshit when necessary). She encourages & coaches me to tackle the areas of business that I find difficult and I now confidently go for bigger targets. I wholeheartedly believe that I have something of unique value that people need and will pay for. Working together we are shaping my business to grow towards a much bigger picture than I could have ever dreamt up on my own… Onwards & forwards & ON YA MZ MARGZ!

Getting Published in Recognised Media

There are many opportunities to get your work published.  In fact getting published in recognised media is way easier than you probably think.

The reason why most get knocked back is because they don’t adhere to some simple rules that will help you get published and also help you get media.

You won’t get any argument from me over “free publicity”.  To get media what you submit has to match what they want.  It’s known as the brief.  You might think that is a really easy concept, but you would be surprised how many people get that wrong.  They write what they want to write, then wonder why it gets knocked back.  Especially in the early days, you need to prove your ability to deliver and once that is established, then you can start writing outside the guidelines.

So find out what the editor wants, NOTICE I DIDN’T SAY WRITE WHAT YOU LIKE.  Then write something that meets the criteria.  Certainly not rocket science huh!

Here are a couple of hints that will help you get published

:

  1. Keep it about THEM (the mag and their readers) not YOU

  2. Find out the word count – never send more than they ask for
  3. Google how to write articles and inform yourself on what is likely to be accepted before you start to write – include Googling as much as you can about the mag you want to submit to.
  4. Research what is popular in other media at the present time, look for trends
  5. Find a twist on the current trends or a twist on the concept – for instance I got a lot of sea change press when I first moved to the country, but they loved me because I would talk about the dark side of sea change – it was a twist on the story line.
  6. Ask yourself “how can I add value to this story?” once it is finished
  7. Add a top 10 or top 5 side bar at the bottom of your story (those little stories that run down the side of a magazine) – they might not use it with this story but they might use it another time
  8. Ensure the content matches exactly what they editor has asked for
  9. Write your article – leave it for a few days and then go back to it – then rewrite and leave it again before sending it – you’d be surprised how many “mistake worms” get at it during the rest period!
  10. Be prepared for them to edit your story

  11. Be prepared for them to edit your story so much that it bears no resemblance to what you wrote but does match their brief
  12. Don’t try to sell directly – sell by proving you are the expert on your topic by adding a lot of value to the article and by making it a strong informative and useful article
  13. Include some interesting case studies
  14. Make it easy for them to publish you – go out of your way to be helpful
  15. Remember to add all the ways they can contact you – including your website
  16. Add some interesting photos if you have the rights to them – mention if you are willing to release the rights to them if they want to use the photo

Journos are busy people – don’t expect them to do any of the work for you – the easier you make it for them to publish you – the more likely they will be to publish you and not the dill brain who is making their life difficult.

Get several copies of the magazine or publication you want to appear in.  Then figure out what they have found acceptable in the past.  Most magazines have a format that appeals to their reader – despite what you think of that format – if you want to get published …….. follow the format.

Get Help!

If you are a rank newbie – pay a professional editor to critique your article and give you feedback.  Patricia Mackenzie has been invaluable to me over the years, knocking my words into shape.  She is not always available so I recommend Kristin Lee to help make sure your grammar and spelling are spot on and that you have answered the brief.

Be professional – sounds a Duh point – but the more professional and together looking you are – the more likely you are to “get a pub”

The biggest piece of advice that I would offer is to START WELL BEFORE DEADLINE.

Give your prose plenty of time for the worms to get at it and submit early not on the very last day of submission.

Remember the golden rule – make it easy for them to put you in print!

Imagine if a well researched, well written professional looking article that meets the criteria and needs very little work done on it, appears on an editors desk a couple of weeks before deadline.  It has much better chance of being read and published than the hundreds that arrive on the deadline date.

If you have a desire to be included in a particular publication, you may wish to phone the editor before you start and ask them exactly what they want, including the word count and make sure you download the author guidelines and STICK TO THEM!

What’s even easier?

Get the professionals to write the article for you – here are some examples of articles written about me:
